Macro Viewpoint

US stock index futures dipped Wednesday, pressured by weakness in chip stocks, as investors stayed cautious ahead of the first batch of Big Tech earnings that could decide whether Wall Street’s AI-driven rally has more room to run.

Results are due after the bell from GOOGL 0.00%↑ and TSLA 0.00%↑ , the first of the “Magnificent 7” megacaps to report, with investors looking for fresh evidence that these companies’ multibillion dollar AI investments are paying off.

The heavy earnings slate sets markets up for a potentially choppy week, with geopolitical risks adding to the caution.

Prime Intelligence

Large-cap Tech positioning is back near the top of its range heading into earnings. But the flows propping it up are far narrower than the headline number suggests.

Large-cap Tech sits at the 95th percentile, the top of its range since 2010, after rebounding sharply over the last three weeks following a significant unwind in June. Overall equity positioning is far more moderate at the 53rd percentile, with large caps broadly at the 72nd. Tech funds have absorbed $71bn of inflows over six weeks, but semiconductors alone account for more than $50bn of it, versus $20bn into the rest of Tech and $20bn into every other sector fund combined.

Key Takeaway: More than two-thirds of that $71bn sits in semis alone. That concentration is what leaves Tech’s near-top positioning most exposed if the semis inflow boom unwinds against ongoing negative catalysts.
