US equities retreated from an all-time high after the Trump administration intensified its trade war.
Over the weekend, Trump threatened to slap 30% tariffs on both the European Union and Mexico—a move that’s putting pressure on already jittery markets, following a string of confrontational trade actions with various global partners.
While traders largely view them as a bargaining tactic and expect final tariffs to be softer, the moves have injected uncertainty just as the S&P 500 was trading near record highs.
The market mostly sees this as a negotiation tactic. But if major tariffs actually hit on August 1, especially with thin trading during the holidays, we could see a sharp market move
